For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Tundra have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Nissan Titan XD doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Tundra has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Titan XD doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Tundra has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Titan XD doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Tundra and Titan XD offer Rear Cross Traffic Alert, but the Tundra with Rear Cross Traffic Alert also has Parking Support Brake (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Titan XD’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Tundra and the Titan XD have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The Toyota Tundra Crew Cab Pickup has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Titan XD is not even a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2025.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tundra for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Nissan doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Titan XD.

There are over 15 percent more Toyota dealers than there are Nissan dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Tundra’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Tundra has a standard 776-amp battery. The Titan XD’s 710-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Tundra third among large light duty pickups in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The Titan XD isn’t in the top three.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Nissan vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 53 more problems per 100 vehicles, Nissan is ranked 23rd.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Nissan vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in overall reliability. Nissan is ranked 12th.

The Tundra’s optional 3.4 turbo V6 produces 66 lbs.-ft. more torque (479 vs. 413) than the Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8. The Tundra’s optional 3.4 turbo V6 hybrid produces 37 more horsepower (437 vs. 400) and 170 lbs.-ft. more torque (583 vs. 413) than the Titan XD’s 5.6 DOHC V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Toyota Tundra turbo V6 is faster than the Nissan Titan XD:

Regenerative brakes improve the Tundra i-FORCE MAX’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Titan XD doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Tundra’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Titan XD doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Tundra has 6.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Titan XD (32.2 vs. 26 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Tundra i-FORCE MAX has a standard locking fuel door with a power remote release convenient to the driver. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Titan XD. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Toyota Tundra, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a nine-speed automatic is available for the Titan XD.

For better traction, the Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Titan XD (285/65R18 vs. 275/65R18).

The Tundra Capstone’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Titan XD’s optional 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Tundra has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Titan XD. The Tundra Capstone’s 22-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the Titan XD.

The front and rear suspension of the Tundra uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the Titan XD, which uses leaf springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The Tundra offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Titan XD’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Tundra Platinum/1794/Capstone has a standard automatic load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Titan XD doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For much better steering response and tighter handling the Tundra has rack and pinion steering, like Formula racecars, instead of the recirculating-ball type steering of the Titan XD.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Tundra 6.5-foot bed Crew Cab Pickup’s wheelbase is 6.1 inches longer than on the Titan XD (157.7 inches vs. 151.6 inches).

The Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup handles at .73 G’s, while the Titan XD Platinum pulls only .69 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Tundra 5.5-foot bed Limited Crew Cab Pickup 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the Titan XD PRO-4X (28.5 seconds @ .59 average G’s vs. 29.8 seconds @ .55 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Tundra 6.5-foot bed Extended Cab Pickup’s turning circle is 5.2 feet tighter than the Titan XD’s (48.6 feet vs. 53.8 feet). The Tundra 8.1-foot bed Extended Cab Pickup’s turning circle is 1.8 feet tighter than the Titan XD’s (52 feet vs. 53.8 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Tundra 8.1-foot bed Extended Cab Pickup has a 2.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Titan XD (10.9 vs. 8.2 inches), allowing the Tundra to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Tundra 5.5-foot bed Crew Cab Pickup’s minimum ground clearance is 2.1 inches higher than on the Titan XD Platinum (11.2 vs. 9.1 inches).

The Toyota Tundra may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 1200 pounds less than the Nissan Titan XD.

The front grille of the Tundra SR5/Limited/Platinum/1794/TRD Pro/Capstone uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Titan XD doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The rear step up height for the Tundra Crew Cab Pickup is 1.1 inches lower than the Titan XD (24.7” vs. 25.8”).

Maximum trailer towing in the Nissan Titan XD is limited to 11050 pounds. The Tundra Extended Cab Pickup offers up to a 12000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Tundra (except SR/SR5/Limited/TRD Pro) offers an available heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Titan XD doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Tundra’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Titan XD’s parking brake has to be released manually.

The power windows standard on both the Tundra and the Titan XD have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Tundra is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Titan XD prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Tundra’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Titan XD’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Tundra’s standard Smart Key System allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, unlock the tailgate, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Intelligent Key is an extra cost option on the Titan XD and doesn’t offer a sensor on the tailgate.

The Tundra’s LED headlights produce a whiter, brighter light (up to 3x) using five times less power than the Titan XD SV’s standard halogen headlights. LED lights also light instantly and last over twenty times longer than halogen.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Tundra’s headlights were rated “Good” to “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Titan XD’s headlights are rated “Poor.”

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Tundra to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Titan XD doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan XD offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Tundra offers optional power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Titan XD’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

The Tundra Limited/Platinum/1794/TRD Pro/Capstone has standard front air conditioned seats and the Tundra Platinum/1794/Capstone also has them in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Titan XD doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Tundra Platinum/1794/Capstone has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Titan XD.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Tundra (except SR/SR5) offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The Titan XD doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The Toyota Tundra comes in extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the Nissan Titan XD isn’t available as an extended cab.

The Tundra is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Titan XD doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Toyota Tundra outsold the Nissan Titan by over 11 to one during 2024.
